Biomarkers of Lead Exposure and DNA Methylation within Retrotransposons

BACKGROUND DNA methylation is an epigenetic mark that regulates gene expression. Changes in DNA methylation within white blood cells may result from cumulative exposure to environmental metals such as lead. Bone lead, a marker of cumulative exposure, may therefore better predict DNA methylation than does blood lead. OBJECTIVE In this study we compared associations between lead biomarkers and ...

Biomarkers of metals exposure in fish from lead-zinc mining areas of southeastern Missouri, USA.

The potential effects of proposed lead-zinc mining in an ecologically sensitive area were assessed by studying a nearby mining district that has been exploited for about 30 y under contemporary environmental regulations and with modern technology. Blood and liver samples representing fish of three species (largescale stoneroller, Campostoma oligolepis, n=91; longear sunfish, Lepomis megalotis, ...

Usefulness of biomarkers as intermediate endpoints in health risks posed by occupational lead exposure.

The article concerns potential harmful effects of exposure to lead. Although the occurrence of severe lead poisoning has receded in several countries, occupational exposure resulting in moderate and clinically symptomatic toxicity is still common. An earlier and precise characterization of an individual response is obligatory in order to assess the possible risks for human health. Biomarkers ma...

Effects of lead exposure on oxidative stress biomarkers and plasma biochemistry in waterbirds in the field.

Medina lagoon in Andalusia has one of the highest densities of spent lead (Pb) shot in Europe. Blood samples from waterbirds were collected in 2006-2008 to measure Pb concentration (PbB), δ-aminolevulinic acid dehydratase (ALAD), oxidative stress biomarkers and plasma biochemistry. PbB above background levels (>20 μg/dl) was observed in 19% (n=59) of mallards (Anas platyrhynchos) and in all com...

Blood lead, ethnic origin, and lead exposure.

A survey of blood lead concentrations is reported in a group of 199 young Walsall children (3-6 years of age). The geometric mean blood lead concentration was 0.47 mumol/l (range 0.2-1.6 mumol/l). There were no significant differences in blood lead concentrations between groups of children with different ages, sex, ethnic origin, or environment.
